5 COMMON MISTAKES WET SHAVERS MAKE

Wet shaving is making a comeback. More and more people want to experience a close clean shave, exactly like their grandpa! When switching to wet shaving there are some things to keep in mind to ensure you get the best shave possible. Also, you want to avoid the most common mistakes especially among beginner wet shavers.

1. NOT PUTTING IN THE PREP BEFORE WET SHAVING

If you’re used to an electric razor, you’re probably used to just getting right into it without any prep work. The same is not true for wet shaving. When you shave the old fashion way you do get a closer, crisper shave however only if you get your skin softened up for the task first. It’s best, especially when starting out, to shave after having a hot shower and giving your face a good wash. Not only do the soapy suds carry away any dirt particles that may get caught in the razor but it also opens up your pores allowing for a smoother glide when shaving. If you don’t have time to shower, try washing your face with some warm water for two to three minutes at the basin.

2 & 3. NOT RESPECTING THE LATHER – CONSISTENCY & DISTRIBUTION

The lather is a key component to wet shaving. Not having the proper distribution or consistency of lather is not good for your face. To start with it is important that your lather is the right consistency. It should be wet but not runny, it should stick to your face with ease but be very moist and pliable.
If you imagine the texture and consistency of cool whip you aren’t far off. When the lather starts to become dry it can cause resistance when shaving. This can result in razor burn or cuts and nicks. If you think the mixture is too dry simply add some more water to the brush and lightly add it to the mixture until its correct. Careful not to add too much though because if it’s too runny the lather will run right off your face! More importantly, don’t try to shave areas where the lather has been removed or fallen off. This is a good way to cause irritation to the skin or even cut it.

4. APPLY TO MUCH PRESSURE

It’s easy when you’re first starting out or if you’re used to using a different device, to accidentally apply to much pressure. Many people applying too much pressure do so because they are rushing or because they think this will provide a closer shave. Razors actually are most effective when light pressure is applied.
Picture trying to scrape off the lather when shaving rather than trying to get the closest cut. This is much closer to the correct pressure as razor work best on flat surfaces. When you apply too much pressure it causes indentations in the skin. The effectiveness of the blade may decrease because of this.

5. USING THE WRONG ANGLE WHEN SHAVING

It’s a common mistake because many of us aren’t taught about it and never really think about it but the angle you hold your razor at impacts how good of a shave you will have. If you hold the razor at too shallow or great angle the blade can start to skip or cut you. Proper angles do vary depending on the razor and brand. A good starting point for people is to try holding the blade at a 30-degree angle.
From here you should gently try adjusting the angle degree in a quiet setting, listening and feeling the hair follicles cut. This will help guide you as to which angle is offering the best shave.
